The Punjab government has announced the creation of specialized road maintenance squads across all districts. Approved by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, these dedicated teams will be responsible for the daily inspection, cleanliness, and repair of the province’s road network.
Enhanced Monitoring and Urban Upgrades In her directives, the Chief Minister instructed district officials, including commissioners and deputy commissioners, to strictly monitor the progress, physical scope, spending, and quality of ongoing development projects. She emphasized that all infrastructure efforts must strictly adhere to approved technical standards and materials, with zero tolerance for compromised quality or transparency.
For better urban mobility and safety, she ordered the installation of energy-efficient, easy-to-maintain lighting, cat’s eyes on specific city roads, and the use of highly durable thermoplastic road markings. The visual appeal of the roadways is also a major priority; instructions were given to improve median landscaping, traffic signs, and directional signage, as well as to properly light or decorate roadside electricity poles.
Redesigning City Entrances and Commercial Zones A notable aesthetic shift will involve doing away with concrete gates at the entry points of cities and tehsils. Instead, city names will be prominently displayed on beautifully landscaped green spaces. Modern designs—taking inspiration from Chinese city entrances—will be adopted for district borders, while tehsil entryways will feature locally adjusted, approved concepts. Furthermore, roads will no longer feature bare concrete structures in the middle without integrated planters.
The Chief Minister also focused on commercial infrastructure, calling for food streets to be developed as distinct commercial zones complete with proper parking, robust cleanliness protocols, and organized traffic management. Similar improvements regarding sanitation, commercial activity, and access were directed for vegetable markets across the province.
Separately, the Chief Minister took a moment to pay tribute to the Pakistan Navy on Navy Day, commending their professional excellence, maritime protection efforts, and crucial role in safeguarding merchant vessels during times of regional tension.
