Pakistan Freelancers Earn $352 Million in Two Months as Earnings Jump 44%

Pakistan’s freelance economy has started the new fiscal year on a strong note, with overseas earnings from freelancers reaching $352 million during July and August 2026.

The latest figures represent a significant increase from the $244 million recorded during the corresponding two months of the previous fiscal year. This translates into year-on-year growth of approximately 44%, highlighting the growing contribution of independent digital professionals to Pakistan’s services exports.

IT Freelancers Lead the Way

Information technology remained the largest contributor to freelance earnings during the first two months of FY2026-27.

Freelancers providing IT-related services generated approximately $212 million, accounting for around 60% of the total freelance inflows.

Meanwhile, professionals working in non-IT freelance services brought in approximately $139 million during the same period.

The figures demonstrate that Pakistan’s freelance market is expanding beyond traditional software development and technology roles, with professionals offering a wider range of services to international clients.

AI and Digital Skills Support Growth

One factor supporting the expansion of Pakistan’s freelance sector is the growing adoption of new digital skills.

Artificial intelligence tools, automation, software development, digital marketing, graphic design and other technology-driven services are increasingly becoming important areas for professionals working with overseas clients.

The country’s freelance ecosystem is also gradually evolving from individuals working independently toward teams and small digital agencies capable of offering multiple services to international customers.

Skills-development programs conducted by government institutions, private organizations and other training providers have also increased opportunities for young Pakistanis to acquire skills that can be sold internationally.

Freelancing Becomes More Important for Pakistan’s Digital Economy

Freelance earnings are becoming an increasingly important component of Pakistan’s broader digital economy.

The Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26 showed that freelance-related earnings had already become a notable source of foreign exchange, while IT and IT-enabled services continued to play a major role in the country’s services exports.

Recent regulatory measures have also focused on making it easier for IT companies and freelancers to receive overseas payments through formal banking channels.

The State Bank of Pakistan introduced additional measures in April 2026 aimed at improving the processing of inward export receipts and outward payments through Exporters’ Special Foreign Currency Accounts (ESFCAs).

Banks were also advised to establish mechanisms for resolving complaints from IT companies and freelancers more efficiently.

Pakistan’s Freelance Workforce Continues to Expand

Industry estimates put Pakistan’s freelance workforce at close to 3 million people, covering fields ranging from software development and graphic design to marketing, consulting and other professional services.

With international demand for digital services continuing to evolve, Pakistan’s ability to increase freelance export earnings will depend heavily on skills development, reliable digital infrastructure, access to international payment channels and the ability of local professionals to move into higher-value services.

The strong performance during the first two months of FY2026-27 suggests that freelancing will continue to play an important role in Pakistan’s technology and services export landscape.
