In a significant move toward sustainable urban mobility, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has greenlit the expansion of the province’s electric bus service to the tehsil level. The extensive rollout is scheduled to commence operations in January 2027.
During a recent meeting in Lahore, the provincial government approved a plan to deploy 1,500 electric buses across 91 tehsils. To support this infrastructure, dedicated bus depots will also be established in each participating tehsil.
The first batch of this new fleet is expected to arrive in Lahore by January 2027. Moving forward, the Punjab administration has set an ambitious target to have 3,000 electric buses actively operating throughout the province by June 2027, with the preliminary phase slated for completion by this coming September.
The regional distribution plan highlights major allocations across the province:

Bahawalpur: 215 buses across 11 tehsils

According to provincial officials, 612 electric buses are already operational across various districts, facilitating millions of daily commutes. An additional 192 units are set to hit the roads in Multan and surrounding districts in the coming days.
To further bolster public transit, the Chief Minister has also sanctioned additional electric buses for major urban centers, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Gujrat, and Sheikhupura, among others. This broad initiative aims to offer citizens cleaner, more reliable, and environmentally friendly commuting alternatives.
In parallel with the electric bus rollout, the government reported that construction on mass transit systems in Faisalabad and Gujranwala is advancing swiftly, alongside ongoing rehabilitation work at 25 stations along the Lahore Metrobus route.
