In a major step to modernize its energy distribution network, the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) has announced plans to roll out 65,000 Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart meters. This initiative is a core component of the foreign-funded Electricity Distribution Efficiency Improvement Project (EDEIP).
The extensive upgrade will primarily focus on PESCO’s Khyber and Peshawar circles. According to updated project documentation, the installation of the 5-20kW smart meters is backed by an allocation of Rs. 1.82 billion, which encompasses $6.5 million in foreign funding.
Beyond smart meters, the project will overhaul the physical infrastructure. PESCO plans to install approximately 1,298 kilometers of aerial bundled cables (ABC) across 60 feeders in the two designated circles. This specific cabling enhancement carries a revised budget of Rs. 3.415 billion, divided between Rs. 2.732 billion in foreign expenses and Rs. 683.043 million locally.
To ensure robust implementation, PESCO has earmarked Rs. 2.67 billion for technical support and equipment. This funding will cover essential upgrades like new testing and metering tools, enhanced transformer workshops, IT infrastructure, protective gear, and necessary vehicles. Additionally, the project dedicates Rs. 560 million for direct execution support and Rs. 126 million toward staff training and capacity development.
The total investment for the overarching EDEIP stands at an updated Rs. 30.256 billion, translating to roughly $108.056 million. This budget represents Rs. 21.268 billion sourced from foreign finance and Rs. 8.988 billion in local capital. Ultimately, this comprehensive integration of smart technology and upgraded infrastructure is aimed at dramatically improving the reliability and efficiency of PESCO’s power distribution.
