Pakistan Used Vehicle Imports Rise 4,642% Since May

Pakistan’s Used Vehicle Imports Jump 4,642% Between May and September

Pakistan imported 2,276 used vehicles in September 2026, compared with 48 in May, according to figures attributed to government sources.

The increase amounts to approximately 4,642%, measured against May’s unusually small base. It is a comparison between two monthly totals, rather than annual growth.

Government Reviews Import Rules

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting on October 7 to examine rising used vehicle imports through commercial and gift schemes.

Officials discussed their implications for the automobile industry. Provisions governing these imports are expected to feature in the forthcoming Auto Policy.

Manufacturers and Importers Differ

Local assemblers have warned that increasing imports could weaken demand for domestically assembled vehicles.

Importers, meanwhile, argue that additional supply can strengthen competition and expand buyers’ choices.

The policy review is expected to consider both positions as the government finalizes the framework.
