Pakistan Urges UN and African Union to Strengthen Conflict Prevention
Pakistan has called for stronger cooperation between the United Nations and African Union to prevent conflicts and improve responses to Africa’s peace and security challenges.
Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, outlined the position during a Security Council briefing on cooperation with regional organisations.
African Ownership Must Guide Efforts
Jadoon stressed that African ownership should remain central to international peace initiatives.
He said the UN–AU partnership had established a strong institutional foundation but needed closer political coordination and concrete results on the ground.
Pakistan called for cooperation spanning conflict prevention, mediation, peace operations, peacebuilding and counterterrorism.
Turning Commitments Into Action
The briefing also heard calls for a partnership capable of anticipating crises and addressing the pressures behind instability.
UN representative Parfait Onanga-Anyanga highlighted the need for greater investment in prevention, mediation and nationally owned political solutions.
The discussions emphasised sustained coordination and predictable support for African-led peace operations as priorities for more effective crisis response.
