Work on New Motorway Expected to Begin in November
Construction on the planned Sukkur–Karachi Motorway is expected to begin in November, Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan said during an address to the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
According to the government announcement, the project will have three approved sections and is intended to extend high-speed road access toward Karachi Port. The minister did not provide a detailed construction schedule or say when the full route would be completed.
Three sections planned
The government’s announcement referred to the project as the Sukkur–Karachi Motorway. Other coverage has described the relevant project as the Sukkur–Hyderabad M-6. The announcement did not list the three sections, their individual lengths, or their construction costs.
The project is expected to improve connectivity for freight and trade moving toward Karachi Port. However, the available announcement does not specify a completion date or detail how the project will connect with existing roads.
NHA highlights funding and road priorities
Khan also discussed the National Highway Authority’s finances, saying the NHA aims to raise its revenue from Rs66 billion to Rs160 billion, while keeping administrative expenses capped at Rs50 billion. He said the authority was prioritising major road projects and using its resources to support infrastructure development.
The minister’s remarks set a planned start month for the motorway, but further details about procurement, contractors, costs and the construction timetable were not given. The November start remains the announced target; the full project schedule has yet to be outlined.
