PIA Approves Lease of Five Aircraft as UK and Europe Operations Expand
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has approved plans to lease five aircraft as the carrier moves to increase capacity on its international network, particularly routes serving the United Kingdom and Europe.
The decision includes a six-month wet lease of two Boeing 777 aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways, while three additional aircraft are planned to be acquired through dry leases.
The move comes as PIA prepares to increase its London services and pursue a broader fleet-modernization strategy.
Two Boeing 777s to Join PIA on Wet Lease
The PIA board approved the wet lease of two Boeing 777 aircraft from European carrier Norse Atlantic for a period of six months.
The aircraft are expected to support PIA’s operations to the UK and Europe.
A wet lease generally means the lessor provides the aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance, while the airline leasing the aircraft uses the additional capacity for its network.
For PIA, this arrangement can provide additional aircraft relatively quickly without waiting for the longer process involved in purchasing and introducing new aircraft.
Three More Aircraft Approved on Dry Lease
In addition to the two Boeing 777s, the board approved plans for three aircraft on dry lease.
A dry lease differs from a wet lease because it normally involves leasing the aircraft itself rather than receiving the aircraft together with crew and operational support.
This means PIA would generally operate dry-leased aircraft using its own crews and operational arrangements, subject to the final lease agreements and regulatory requirements.
Reports on the board decision have not yet provided detailed information about the models, lessors, lease duration or delivery schedule for these three aircraft.
Those details should therefore not be assumed until they are formally announced.
PIA Is Increasing London Flights to Seven Per Week
Additional aircraft capacity comes as PIA prepares for a significant expansion of its London schedule.
From October 27, 2026, the airline plans to operate seven weekly flights between Pakistan and London, up from four currently.
The planned schedule consists of:
- Islamabad to London: five flights per week
- Lahore to London: two flights per week
The expanded schedule effectively gives PIA a daily presence on the Pakistan-London market across the two Pakistani departure cities.
PIA has linked the expansion to passenger demand and the return of its slots at London Heathrow Airport that had previously been allocated to other airlines.
Why Additional Aircraft Matter for PIA
Adding aircraft is about more than simply launching additional flights.
Airlines require enough operational aircraft to maintain schedules while allowing other planes to undergo routine maintenance, inspections and unexpected repairs.
Limited fleet availability can make an airline more vulnerable to delays or cancellations when an aircraft becomes unavailable.
Additional leased capacity can therefore give PIA greater operational flexibility as it expands international services.
The board has also instructed management to accelerate the procurement of spare parts for the existing fleet, according to reports about the meeting.
That indicates fleet availability and maintenance are being addressed alongside aircraft leasing.
PIA’s Fleet Modernization Plans Go Beyond These Five Aircraft
The leasing decision comes alongside broader discussions about modernizing PIA’s fleet.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb met Boeing Global President Dr. Brendan Nelson in New York on September 22, according to an official statement from Pakistan’s Press Information Department.
The meeting covered potential acquisition of new aircraft, earlier delivery opportunities and interim leasing arrangements.
Boeing also confirmed that it would provide PIA with a revised aircraft acquisition proposal.
The discussions additionally covered financing possibilities involving the US Export-Import Bank, as well as engines, spare parts, aircraft maintenance and the restoration of grounded aircraft.
The five-aircraft leasing decision and the longer-term Boeing discussions should, however, be viewed separately. Leasing aircraft provides near-term capacity, while purchasing new aircraft would represent a much longer-term fleet investment.
PIA Is Operating Under New Management Control
The fleet expansion is also taking place during a major transition for PIA.
Following Pakistan’s privatization process, management control of PIACL was transferred to the investor consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation Limited.
According to the Privatisation Commission, the consortium made an investment commitment totaling Rs180 billion under the transaction structure.
At the first closing, Rs10 billion was paid to the government and Rs80 billion was injected into PIA as fresh equity.
The Privatisation Commission said the fresh investment is intended to support areas including fleet expansion and modernization, network growth, operational improvements and customer service.
A further Rs45 billion investment is scheduled as part of the second closing under the agreed transaction structure.
Wet Lease vs Dry Lease: What’s the Difference?
The combination of wet and dry leases gives PIA two different ways of adding capacity.
Wet lease: The aircraft typically comes with crew, maintenance and insurance from the leasing company. It can be useful when an airline needs additional capacity relatively quickly.
Dry lease: Primarily provides the aircraft, with the operating airline responsible for areas such as crew and operational arrangements.
Using both structures could allow PIA to address immediate capacity requirements while gradually adding aircraft that can be integrated more directly into its own operations.
What Happens Next?
Several important details remain to be announced.
These include the delivery dates for the leased aircraft, specifications of the three dry-leased planes and the exact routes on which individual aircraft will operate.
PIA’s planned increase to seven weekly London flights from October 27 provides one clear indication of where some of the additional capacity will be needed.
Meanwhile, discussions with Boeing suggest the airline is also considering a longer-term modernization program rather than relying exclusively on short-term aircraft leases.
For passengers, the most immediate change will be additional capacity between Pakistan and London as PIA increases its weekly schedule later in October.
