Pakistan AI Projects: PM Sets November Deadline

ISLAMABAD, October 29, 2026 — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has set a November deadline for key Pakistan AI projects being developed with Alibaba. The initiatives cover exports, farming, healthcare and public services.

Shehbaz gave the instructions at a review meeting on Wednesday. He asked ministries to complete the required steps and report on progress. The Nation reported on the meeting.

Pakistan AI projects cover exports, health and farming

The prime minister said digital technology could help improve trade, exports and farm productivity. He also welcomed Alibaba’s cooperation on exporting Pakistani agricultural products to China.

Meanwhile, officials reviewed AI tools for farming and digital platforms for exporting citrus fruit and olives. A dedicated Pakistan pavilion has also been set up on Alibaba’s platform to promote local products abroad, according to Dawn’s report on the meeting.

Health projects and AI training planned

Shehbaz directed officials to work with Alibaba on an AI-assisted system for early cancer detection. In addition, he called for a 15-day AI training programme for IT graduates through the Ministry of IT’s Ignite programme.

The meeting also reviewed a proposed pilot project for AI-assisted cancer diagnosis. However, reports describe the health system as planned or proposed; they do not say it is already in use.

Government agencies to use digital tools

The prime minister directed the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority to develop an analytics system for monitoring the petroleum supply chain. At the same time, he asked the Export Promotion Board to work with Alibaba to increase exports.

Other initiatives include digital verification of trade documents through Pakistan Single Window. Also, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority and Alibaba are preparing a two-year programme to help smaller businesses reach international markets.

Officials reviewed plans for a central data hub for the Federal Board of Revenue and Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited. Projects involving digital technology in higher education, railways, postal services and urban administration were also described as nearing completion.

Ministries face a November deadline

Shehbaz said the partnership with Alibaba should produce measurable results. Therefore, he directed relevant ministries to complete the required steps by November and submit progress reports.

The government says AI and digitalisation are central to national development. Still, these projects are at different stages. Their impact will depend on how they are carried out.
