Joe Wilson Says Makkah Pact Could Become Middle East NATO
US Congressman Joe Wilson has suggested that the Makkah defense alliance involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye could develop into a “NATO of the Middle East.”
In an October 5 statement on X, he welcomed the alliance’s activation in response to Houthi attacks, describing the aggression as Iranian-backed.
Members Agree on Defense Measures
According to reported official statements, an emergency meeting in Riyadh approved rapid deployment of military personnel and capabilities to Saudi Arabia. Implementation will follow agreed procedures and the participating countries’ national laws.
The members also condemned attacks targeting Saudi cities, infrastructure and holy sites.
Pakistan and Turkiye Provide Support
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said Pakistani and Turkish forces were providing support in the operational area, while Saudi forces were conducting combat operations.
The committee appointed retired Lieutenant General Nauman Mahmood as secretary-general for a three-year term.
What Wilson’s Comparison Means
Wilson’s description expresses his view of the alliance’s potential. It should be understood as a political comparison, rather than an announcement of formal NATO status.
