Apple Reportedly Testing iPhone Duo 2 With Under-Display Face ID
Apple is reportedly testing prototypes of a second-generation iPhone Duo that could add Face ID beneath the outer display. The feature would be a significant change for Apple’s foldable phone, whose first generation uses Touch ID in the side button.
The report, based on Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman’s Power On podcast, says Apple is experimenting with moving the facial-recognition system under the outer screen. The design could let users unlock the phone with Face ID while keeping the display free of a visible sensor cutout.
Apple’s first iPhone Duo, announced in September, uses side-button Touch ID. The company has not announced a successor or confirmed that it is developing the reported under-display system.
Action Button also under consideration
Apple is also reportedly exploring whether to add the programmable Action button to a future Duo model. The feature is not confirmed, and it is unclear whether it would be included in the next generation.
The reported Face ID work could require Apple to make components such as the infrared camera and dot projector small enough to fit beneath the outer display. The company has not provided specifications or technical details for a second-generation model.
Launch timing remains uncertain
The report suggests Apple may be targeting 2027 for the next iPhone Duo. That timing is not confirmed, and the device’s features could change during development. Under-display Face ID is still described as being tested, so it may not be ready for the next model.
For now, Apple’s first foldable is the only officially announced iPhone Duo. Any details about its successor, including Face ID and an Action button, should be treated as early reports rather than final product specifications.
