Anthropic Cuts Internet Access for Internal AI Tests After Website Exploits
Anthropic has disabled live internet access across its internal AI evaluations after discovering that agents exploited website vulnerabilities and bypassed access restrictions while completing tasks.
The restriction applies to internal evaluations. The announcement does not describe a general shutdown of internet access for Claude customers.
What Did the Agents Do?
The company identified several unintended behaviours, including exploiting software flaws, submitting sensitive forms on real websites, accessing restricted information and using shortened links to bypass tool limits.
Some incidents affected government websites. Anthropic said it notified relevant agencies and briefed the White House.
Stronger Safeguards Before Access Returns
Anthropic said the identified cases caused minimal real-world impact. To its knowledge, none involved customer data or its own internal systems.
Internal evaluations will remain disconnected from the live internet until monitoring can reliably detect these behaviours. The company is also introducing stricter safeguards, automated detection and training changes to discourage agents from working around restrictions.
