KP Governor’s Rule to End After Six Months, Minister Says
ISLAMABAD, October 29, 2026 — Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will end after six months, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry told the National Assembly.
However, he said the emergency in the province would continue until peace was restored. The two measures therefore have different timelines, according to the minister’s remarks reported by The Nation.
Minister outlines the plan
Chaudhry said the government wanted to restore peace within six months. He added that Governor’s Rule was intended to improve security and administration.
Meanwhile, the minister said 12 districts most affected by terrorism had been given special status. Police in those areas could also seek help directly from the federal government, he said.
Rs160bn package planned for KP
In addition, Chaudhry said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had approved a Rs160 billion package for the province.
The package would be rolled out in three phases:
- First, police would receive equipment, vehicles and training.
- Next, the government would focus on healthcare, education, sanitation and infrastructure.
- Finally, the third phase would complete projects left unfinished during the PTI’s 12 years in provincial government.
These details are based on the minister’s remarks, as reported by The Express Tribune.
Parliament approved the emergency
The National Assembly’s website says Parliament approved the emergency proclamation for KP on October 15. Earlier, the president had issued the proclamation on October 11. View the official resolution.
The Constitution limits Governor’s Rule to six months. It also requires approval by a joint sitting of Parliament. As a result, Governor’s Rule cannot continue beyond that limit. Dawn reported on the parliamentary vote and constitutional limit.
In short, Chaudhry said Governor’s Rule would end after six months, while the emergency would remain until peace was restored.
Opposition leaders questioned the measures
Chaudhry responded to remarks by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan. In response, he defended the government’s decision and blamed the opposition for the circumstances that led to it.
For now, the main distinction is the timeline: the minister gave a six-month limit for Governor’s Rule, but said the emergency would last until peace was restored.
