UN Chief António Guterres Arrives in Pakistan for October 6–8 Visit

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has arrived in Islamabad for an official visit at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

Acting Foreign Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir received him on arrival. The Foreign Office has announced the visit’s dates as October 6–8, 2026.

Meetings With Pakistan’s Leadership

The announced programme includes meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.

The discussions are expected to cover regional and international developments, alongside Pakistan’s cooperation with the United Nations.

The Foreign Office said the engagements would highlight Pakistan’s support for multilateral cooperation and its contributions to international peace and security.

Disaster Preparedness on the Agenda

Guterres is scheduled to attend a briefing at the National Disaster Management Authority.

The United Nations said this engagement would allow him to assess Pakistan’s progress in strengthening disaster preparedness and resilience since the devastating floods of 2022.

During his previous visit that year, Guterres travelled to flood-affected regions. The current programme places renewed attention on preparedness and early warning capabilities.

Visit to UN Observer Mission Headquarters

The secretary-general will also visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan, known as UNMOGIP.

According to the UN’s pre-visit briefing, his discussions will additionally address Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts between the United States and Iran.

These engagements form part of the announced itinerary. Any agreements, commitments or outcomes will depend on the meetings held during the visit.
