Plans for the domestic production of BYD electric vehicles (EVs) in Pakistan are being adjusted, with the official startup of the new assembly plant now slated for the second half of 2026. The shift represents a change from earlier intentions to have the facility operational during the first half of the same fiscal year.
The update was provided by Hub Power Company Limited (Hubco) to analysts this week, according to a client note from Topline Securities. Hubco is a crucial player in this initiative, holding a 50% stake in the project. The joint venture dates back to a June 2024 partnership agreement between Hubco and BYD Auto Industry Company.
Mega Motor Company (Pvt) Ltd (MMCPL), another involved entity associated with Hubco, was tapped to establish the actual assembly site. The facility is being built in Gharo, Sindh. It will initially possess an annual production capacity of 25,000 units, with the planned potential to scale operations up to 50,000 vehicles per year as the market develops.
As the project moves through these foundational phases, some specific operational details have yet to be disclosed. Local reports indicate that MMCPL did not respond to queries regarding the cause of the delay, the current physical status of the plant, its first-year targets, localization strategies, or whether BYD will import vehicles before the local assembly begins.
The financial scale of this undertaking remains significant. Hubco management has estimated the total project investment at $150 million, which includes $90 million in dedicated project financing. Beyond establishing a reliable local production base, the group has set an ambitious target to capture 30% of Pakistan’s combined EV and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) market by the year 2030. Part of the initial rollout included plans for major dealerships and service centers across Pakistan’s three largest cities.
While the plant startup has been delayed, this project still represents a substantial and committed step towards localizing the production of global EV technology in Pakistan.
