OpenAI’s GPT-6.1 Terra Matches Astra on One Benchmark at One-Tenth the Price
OpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, a model designed for visual reasoning, computer use and writing. The company says Terra performed on par with its GPT-6 Astra model on one computer-use benchmark while costing one-tenth as much per token.
The comparison was made on Agents’ Last Exam, which tests AI performance on professional tasks involving computer use. OpenAI reported that GPT-6.1 Terra matched Astra at medium reasoning effort. The result is specific to that benchmark and setting; it does not establish equal performance across every task.
API costs are lower than Astra’s
OpenAI lists standard API pricing for GPT-6.1 Terra at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. GPT-6 Astra is priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens under standard pricing.
The price difference could matter to developers running high-volume tasks, where API token use is a major part of the cost. Actual spending will vary with how much input and output a workflow generates.
Focus on visual reasoning and computer use
OpenAI describes Terra as a fast, efficient model for interpreting visual information, operating computer interfaces and producing clear writing. Example uses include reviewing technical drawings, filling forms, editing videos and processing invoices.
The company also reported improvements over GPT-5.6 Terra on its own coding and visual-reasoning tests. These are OpenAI’s benchmark results; independent performance can differ depending on the task and evaluation method.
Availability
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and through the OpenAI API. Developers can select it using the model identifier gpt-6.1-terra.
