Gilgit-Baltistan Plans 250-Acre Industrial Zone to Attract Investment
Gilgit-Baltistan’s industrial development plans are moving forward as the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) brings stakeholders together to advance the 250-acre Maqpondass Special Economic Zone.
According to an official update, the project is being pursued through a public-private partnership, with the aim of attracting investment and creating opportunities for local businesses.
Focus on Local Industries
The zone will focus on agro-processing, minerals, handicrafts and wood-based products. These sectors reflect the region’s resources and existing economic strengths.
The initiative aims to encourage value addition, generate employment opportunities and draw investment. The update also highlights Gilgit-Baltistan’s proximity to China as an advantage for industrial development.
An Established CPEC Project
The CPEC Secretariat already lists the project, using the spelling “Moqpondass,” among its special economic zones. Its published progress overview places the zone in the project pipeline.
The latest announcement describes efforts to advance development. It does not provide a completion deadline, investment amount or confirmed employment target.
