Faster Cheque Clearing: SBP to Begin Digital Processing Pilot on October 15
The State Bank of Pakistan will begin introducing the Pakistan Express Clearing System (PECS) on October 15, 2026, aiming to make cheque clearing and settlement more efficient.
The system will use electronic cheque images in place of physical instruments during clearing. Implementation will begin with selected participating institutions before expanding nationwide by April 30, 2027.
How Digital Cheque Clearing Works
PECS uses a process called cheque truncation. The bank collecting a cheque captures its image and sends it, together with the relevant clearing data, to the clearinghouse, NIFT.
NIFT then forwards the information to the bank responsible for paying the cheque.
Processing images electronically reduces reliance on transporting paper cheques between institutions. This is the main change intended to streamline the clearing process.
Rollout Will Take Place in Stages
The implementation schedule has three stages:
| Stage | Timeline | Planned Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Initial pilot | October 15–November 15, 2026 | Selected participating institutions |
| Wider implementation | November 16–December 31, 2026 | Remaining clearinghouse members, with branch capability progressively expanded |
| Nationwide rollout | By April 30, 2027 | Required infrastructure and nationwide implementation |
Participating institutions and the clearinghouse will review the initial pilot, resolve issues and use those findings to guide the expansion.
Additional Daily Clearing Cycle
An additional PECS clearing cycle will operate daily between October 15 and December 31, 2026. The clearinghouse must submit this cycle to SBP by 3 p.m.
That deadline relates to the clearinghouse’s submission to the central bank. It should not be interpreted as a universal customer deposit deadline or a guarantee that every cheque will be credited by 3 p.m.
What Customers Can Expect
The October 15 start marks a limited pilot, so availability will depend on a bank’s participation and implementation progress.
Banks must train relevant staff, explain the new process to customers and comply with applicable clearing timelines and settlement requirements.
PECS is designed to improve processing efficiency. Customers should confirm availability and deposit cut-off times with their own bank as the rollout progresses.
