PTI Begins Islamabad Long March After Government Talks Fail

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf began its Islamabad-bound long march on October 4, 2026, following unsuccessful negotiations between the federal government and opposition representatives.

According to reports, the convoy departed from Lakki Marwat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, led by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. Its departure marked the start of a planned multi-day journey.

Negotiations End Without an Agreement

Government-opposition talks were chaired by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq at Parliament House.

The discussions sought to avert the march and address wider disagreements, but concluded without a consensus. Reports indicated that no date had been agreed for the next round of negotiations.

Access to Imran Khan Remains a Central Dispute

Opposition representatives sought a meeting with imprisoned PTI founder Imran Khan before deciding whether to withdraw the protest.

Access to Khan, including by his personal physician, remained unresolved during the negotiations, according to statements attributed to opposition leaders.

The government wanted the march called off, leaving the two sides divided over the conditions for a political agreement.

KP Security Cooperation Also Features in Talks

Negotiators also disagreed over the respective responsibilities of the federal and provincial governments in addressing terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to accounts of the discussions, repeated revisions to a proposed agreement failed to bridge these differences.

Government representatives and opposition leaders offered competing explanations for the breakdown. Responsibility for the failure should therefore be treated as disputed rather than assigned to one side as an established fact.

March Begins as Islamabad Faces Restrictions

Reports described participants travelling in buses, cars and trucks, with overnight stops planned along the route.

Authorities had placed container roadblocks at approaches to Islamabad and within the city.

The launch of the convoy does not establish that participants had reached the capital. Planned movements and actual progress need to be distinguished as the situation develops.

Government Cites Security Concerns

The federal government urged postponement of the march against the backdrop of militant attacks in the northwest.

PTI proceeded after negotiations failed to produce an agreement. The competing positions place both political demands and security coordination at the centre of the dispute.

What the Breakdown Means

The unsuccessful talks left the protest moving forward without an agreed framework for resolving the immediate disagreements.

Further negotiations could still change the course of events. Any claim that dialogue has ended permanently would
